I bought my most recent used car by looking at the listings on Craigslist. It figured out what kind of car I wanted, the price range and then started scanning listings on Craigslist once or twice a day. When I saw one that fit the bill, I jumped on it immediately and landed the car. I wound up with a nice 1999 Toyota Camry with 90000 miles, in good shape, and for $5000. It passed inspection without any work required. Once you've got the info, you can run the price through Kelly Blue Book and see if its in the range. I also buy a one month subscription to Carfax, which allows you to run any VIN and check the history of the car for accidents etc.
I don't know if this is what you were looking for, but it worked for me recently and thought I would pass it on.
Carfax, yeah. Cars have been in floods down there, which screw 'em up forever. Caveat Emptor
Toyotas...Japan rules the automotive market in my opinion. Fords...well, unless you're buying a truck, don't even bother.
Ya, Toyota, Toyota, Toyota! My 96 Corolla has about 136,000 miles on it and still going strong with hardly any major expenses/problems. Hoping it'll last the expected 200,000. Of course, knowing your luck, you'll probably find a way to find a dud no matter how good the make/model.
